The Best Places to Hunt Truffles

Autumn means the arrival of culinary black gold, here's where to find it.

Fret not at the sight of bare trees, because autumn brings two of our favourite things: the chance to don cosy layers, like our own Chunky Cashmere Crew Neck, and the start of truffle season. The best way to enjoy both is to combine them, tramping through pungent, earthy forests, bundled up in toasty knitwear. Ideally, you'll hunt your own – few things taste as good as a truffle that you freed from the soil that morning – but even if the truffle dogs come up empty-pawed, these are the places to enjoy the best that autumn offers.

Alba, Italy

The world's white truffle HQ, Alba's density of Michelin-starred restaurants isn't a coincidence. They're best enjoyed simply, shaved over the local egg pasta, tajarin, although you'll find plenty of restaurants where the tuber gets more complex treatment, such as the three-star Piazza Duomo. So proud is Alba of its local delicacy that, since 1929, it's held the International Alba White Truffle Fair every October and November. That's also when the temperature starts dipping in in northern Italy, so we'd recommend packing our cashmere hoodie for when you're tracking down truffles, and our Ivory Cashmere Cable Knit for when you're tucking into your finds later that evening.

Tuscany, Italy

A few hundred miles south, Tuscany is not only just one of Italy's truffle meccas, it's also a hub for art, food and wine. All three come together in Florence, where you can enjoy a truffle tour in the morning (outfit choice: a pair of our Medium Weight Cotton Trousers and our Hunting Green Cashmere Zip-up, to blend in with the falling foliage), tour the Uffizi Gallery in the afternoon (smartened up in our Chocolate Brown Piqué Polo Shirt) and in the evening, appetite built, indulge in a truffle banquet at Florence's specialist truffle restaurant, Savini Tartufi.

Provence, France

Italy doesn't have the monopoly on truffles. Across the border, Provence offers truffle-hunters (and truffle-munchers) ample opportunities to discover what makes the black variant of tuber just as lusted after as its white cousin. The region is famous – or, rather, infamous – for the biting mistral, or north wind, so be sure to wrap up; our Double-Faced Cashmere Scarf, in grey and brown, will do the job beautifully. Mont Ventoux is France's truffle capital – 80 per cent of the country's truffle production occurs in its shadow – with the season lasting from December through to early March. If you'd prefer to let someone else do the hunting, then head instead to the Carpentras truffle market, which every Friday and Saturday throughout the truffle season.

Oregon, USA

Truffle cultivation in the US has taken root slowly, but the woody, west-coast state of Oregon has proved a perfect environment for both black and white variants to flourish. Visit in late January, to take in the Eugene Truffle Festival (23-26 January 2020), where you can sample its four homegrown varieties. The Willamette Valley has already found gastronomic fame for the terroir of its wines and hazelnuts, and local growers are confident that its truffles will be embraced in the same way. With beer-and-truffle pairings, as well as decadent tasting menus from local chefs (you're covered from breakfast through to dinner, which comes complete with local wine flights), it's the best way to find out if they're right.
